This is a fairly straight forward self-introduction or introduction game that I used with my 3rd year JHS elective class. What you do is:

1) You fill a bag with various items (10 or more) that reflect some aspect of your personality. In my bag , I had:

  • a music CD
  • D.S. Lite
  • Halloween mask
  • a book
  • my diary....
  • NOTE: if you have an assistant for this class, you can get them to do likewise therefore having two bags of truth. My assistant had:
  • a horse whip...
  • obviously, the more interesting the items, the greater the excitement among students!

2) Divide the students into pairs or small groups (3 or 4 seems to work well).

3) Hand out blank A4 sized paper to each student.

4) Empty the contents of your bag in a pile or have the students walk over to the bag and choose two or more items from it.

5) Students then spend some time writing at least THREE or more sentences about each item. They can write what they wish, as long as they link the item to you. e.g. If you are Honda sensei, the students write: This is Honda sense`s D.S. Lite player. It is pink. She likes computer games. etc. (see variation, below)

6) When they are done with one item, they then describe and relate the next item.

7) Towards the end of the class, one student from each group can stand up and describe an item each to the rest of the class. Students from the various groups then take turns to described the items that they wrote about to the rest of the class.

8) Variation to (#5), above. As in the game Taboo, you can make this game harder by designating some words as Taboo! E.g. words such as `likes`, `plays`, `favourite`, can be taboo. Students then have to think of other verbs or adjectives when writing their sentences. I would suggest that you stick the taboo words to the items in your bag BEFORE the lesson begins.

This lesson worked extremely well for me. My students loved having something visual to focus on, and even low-level classes at my school (I teach at a technical high school) are able to write very simple sentences. Alternatively, when there was not enough time to write the sentences, I just had students come to the front of the class and look at the items (only works with classes of 20 or less).
